The American Red Cross has announced to the public an URGENT NEED for blood and platelet donors. Direct outreach to our donors through emails and calls has already begun. Launching an appeal in November is unprecedented for the Red Cross, and we need everyone’s help to replenish supplies as we head into a difficult holiday blood collection season.

Why are we experiencing this shortage?

Unfortunately, during September and October, we collected more than 21,000 fewer blood and platelet donations than required to fulfill  hospital needs. This is primarily due to fewer blood drives and hurricane drive cancellations.

What is the public call to action?

Right now, the Red Cross is asking for blood and platelet donations, as well as organizations to host blood drives this coming December, January and February. More than 4,300 blood drives are needed to help address the shortage this winter.

Blood drive hosts are a vital part of the lifesaving Red Cross mission with more than 80 percent of blood donations made at blood drives organized by volunteers.

Donations tend to decline and there are fewer drives during the holiday season as individuals & families are busy with holiday festivities & travel. We have a challenging few months ahead of us which may lead to another appeal in the new year depending on donor turnout due to flu, colds & winter weather.
