Virtual Conference Sessions
You are invited to attend OLC's Innovate 2018 conference VIRTUALLY! eLearning and Faculty Development are co-hosting nine sessions streamed live from the OLC national conference in Nashville (see the schedule below). Sessions will cover topics related to online education, including teaching and learning innovation; leadership and change management; the education-workforce continuum; processes, problems, and practices; effective tools, toys and technologies, and research highlights and innovations.

- 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM: HBCU Summit - Welcome And Overview: HBCU Opening Sessions on Affordable Learning Strategies and Initiatives: Lowering the cost of course materials makes education more affordable and provides students more opportunities to learn. The presentation will showcase the free and open online educational resources in academic disciplines and career and technical training areas available for community colleges to adopt today. Faculty, staff, students, and program developers can discover free curriculum and program support materials from the SkillsCommons free and open library (http://als.skillscommons.org) and plan how to bring affordable learning solutions to their own campus community.
- 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM: HBCU Summit - Starting Your Own Affordable Learning Solutions Initiative: The opening 90 minutes of the HBCU Summit will focus on a welcome by your HBCU Summit leaders, an overview of HBCU Strategy for Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$), presentation of a Southern University System's system-wide initiative to enable educational quality and college affordability, and Q & A discussion focused on issues and questions raised by these presentations.
- 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM: Using Design to Increase Learner Motivation: This presentation focuses on increasing student motivation via design, with a specific focus on the ARCS model of motivational design as it applies to the online learning space. Participants will leave with functional, practical takeaways that can be implemented into any course.
- 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM: MERLOT Mystery Challenge: Exploring OER Resources to Support Teaching And Learning: Explore the benefits MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching) offers members by participating in the MERLOT Mystery Challenge, modeled after the television game show Hollywood Squares, and hosted by a veteran Associate Editor and master Peer Reviewer as they share their valued experiences.
- 2:30 PM to 3:15 PM: Diversity, Inclusion, and the Stage: Engaging Students Through a Performing Arts-Based Hybrid Model: Hybrid course approaches are typically thought of as the combination of online and classroom experiences. The performing arts-based hybrid model instead features online content paired with student attendance of theater and music experiences. Through this novel approach, students are exposed to a variety of performance types and a rich diversity of voices from the stage. Learn about how the Pennsylvania State University is using this arts-based hybrid model and the unique learning environment of the performance theater to open discussions about diversity, inclusion, and equity with our undergraduate student population.
- 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM: KEYNOTE - CAMPFIRE STORIES: On Being Awake - Shel Kimen (Ford Motor Company): Shel will talk about living on the edge of Failure, what it feels like, how to cope, and how it’s led to innovative opportunities she could have never imagined.

- 7:45 AM to 8:30 AM: eLearnReady: Preparing Students To eLearn Effectively and Users' Feedback from Students and Teachers: With the successful launch of a revolutionary free student tool, eLearnReady, we analyzed students’ responses, identifying their strengths--and improving their weaknesses in online learning. This presentation discusses the identified key variables (n=3000+) of online student success, as well as the user's experience with the tool.
- 8:45 AM to 9:30 AM: Promoting Academic Integrity In Online Courses: Academic integrity in online education is critically important. This session involves a discussion of the approaches used at the presenter’s institution to educate faculty and students about academic integrity as well as the tools and processes that can be used to prevent and detect acts of dishonesty.
- 10:15 AM to 11:00 AM: HBCU Summit - MERLOT and SkillsCommons: Workforce Training and Careers and Hands-On AL$ Workshop On OER: This session will focus on OER resources for career and workforce development
